*The Onbekendegracht originally gave the former city carpenter's garden access to the Amstel river. In a notarial deed drawn up in 1800, the canal was called "the Unknown or Amstelgragtje". The name Korte Amstelgrachtje was also in vogue.[1] Residents of the Onbekendegracht requested the municipality of Amsterdam to change the name of the canal in 1948, as they found it too strange. However, the request was not granted.
In addition, the Onbekendegracht is located in UNESCO World Heritage Site.
